NIMR - Tanga Research Centre

Tanga Research Centre of the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) is strategically situated adjacent to Bombo Referral Regional Hospital in Tanga City in north-eastern Tanzania. It was established by the Medical Research Council of UK during the mid 1970s as a Helminthiasis Research Unit. After establishment of NIMR in 1982, it was incorporated in the institute as Bombo Research Station under the Amani Research Centre. As Bombo station, it continued with helminthiasis research with more focus on the biology and control of lymphatic filariasis. From 2004, a state-of the art biomedical laboratory, the “Amani Biomedical Research Laboratory” (AMBRELA) was constructed to strengthen the capacity of the institute to conduct clinical and biomedical research, by utilizing the close proximity to Bombo hospital. In 2005, Bombo research station was changed into Tanga Research Centre and received majority of staff who were relocated from Amani Research Centre. The mission of Tanga Research Centre is to conduct high quality health research and the vision is to be a Centre of Excellence in Clinical and Biomedical Research in Tanzania. Tanga Centre works with the Ministry of Health to support different diseases control programmes by providing research findings for evidence based policy formulation for the control of malaria, HIV and neglected tropical diseases. It is a member of various local and international organizations and networks.
